About

If you have ever wondered how you can embrace things digital AND flourish at work, then you’re in the right place.

The Library Boss

The Library Boss knows digital literacy is crucial for librarians and provides the tools for you to flourish with grace and flair.

It doesn't matter if you don't have a library qualification, are new to the profession, or haven't got a handle on this digital thing at all.

If you have ever wondered how librarians can embrace things digital AND flourish at work, then you're in the right place.

The Library Boss takes a holistic approach to digital literacy; something that is often overlooked by many libraries, programmes, workshops and courses.

We get stuck on the tech skills and the shiny new things, and forget about the person who needs to learn those skills and use those shiny new things.

You might think it sounds a bit woo-woo. But I'm not a woo-woo kind of person.

I'm an optimistic, creative problem-solving kind of person who questions everything, and then gets on and does stuff to find out what works best.

Hi, I'm Sally Pewhairangi.

I don't have any magic beans or secret sauce.

But I do have 20 plus years library experience and want to share what I have learned to help you improve your digital practice.

Career highlights

(You can find a longer version on Linkedin).
  • While at library school I got my first library job. It was a sole-charge special library position. I floundered without any practical library experience or skills. Thankfully I made some great friends in library school who helped me enormously.
  • I developed the first fully bilingual public library website in New Zealand and can get by using html and css.
  • Projects energise me. I have been involved in the project management profession, teaching non-profits, charities and multinationals and librarians to successfully manage projects.
  • I set up my own business called Finding Heroes to inspire and teach librarians to be the best they can be. After three long-term library projects; 100 workshops; and 1200 thought-provoking blog posts; I had evolved.
  • In 2015 I developed 9 short, self-paced online courses for librarians. The courses teach practical digital literacy skills such as curation and critical thinking. Over 1000 courses have been completed, and my understanding of digital literacy has matured.
  • The Library Boss is the next step in the evolution of helping librarians be the best they can be in all aspects of digital literacy.

Librarianship is more than just a pay-check to me.

A few more things about me

I love:

  1. My sweetheart PB. 20 years and counting.
  2. Sunshine and strawberries. I will always choose summer over winter.
  3. Projects. I LOVE solving problems on a deadline and helping people achieve great things at the same time.
  4. Learning. I like to go deep and test the boundaries of what I can do.
  5. Helping others find their own way to achieve great things.
  6. Watching international tv series with subtitles (mostly crime).

I struggle with:

  1. Separating recycling from non-recycling. Thankfully PB knows what’s what.
  2. Writing decent sentences. Practice, practice, practice.
  3. Saying ‘no’ to food. I love food (and cooking and baking) more than exercise.
  4. Being patient. Especially when there isn’t a reason that makes sense to me.
  5. Having a poker face. You can easily tell what I am thinking by my facial expressions.
  6. Using scissors. I can’t cut in a straight line to save myself.

I am great at:

  1. Listening to what you want to achieve and the challenges you face.
  2. Offering practical suggestions to help you take action.
  3. Working with you to create a set of next steps that energise you.
  4. Being your accountability buddy to keep you from getting sidetracked.
  5. Getting stuff done.
If you’ve read this far then maybe you feel like we might make great friends. 🙂
