Text: Who am I?

I'M JUST like YOU...

I'm a librarian who does my best to help others become more comfortable and confident in a digital world. I am not special or famous. I'm optimistic about my work, and want to make a difference.

Librarians like us believe embracing things digital is crucial for all library staff and the people we serve, to flourish with grace and flair.

But in a rapidly changing landscape with infinite choices, deciding the most effective way to upskill others can sometimes be paralysing.

Sally Pewhairangi

Hello, I'm Sally.

I take a holistic approach to digital literacy.

Digital literacy isn't about teaching tech skills or soft skills.  Digital literacy is about solving a problem that staff value and then finding a way to fit it in to the work they already do.

A successful digital literacy initiative:

  • Works within the complexities and constraints of an organisation.
  • Converts strategy into effective operational plans.
  • Listens and works closely with individual staff.

CONVERT STRATEGIC PRIORITIES INTO EFFECTIVE OPERATIONAL PLANS

Sally was the lead on a cross university project requiring academics lecturing in the first year of every degree to change their processes for providing teaching and learning materials so that they were all compliant with copyright legislation. The fact that this was successfully achieved with almost 100% compliance in a short time period was an outstanding feat.

MEASURE DIGITAL LITERACY SKILLS

I wanted to introduce staff to the basics of digital literacy, and to provide a benchmark for ongoing professional development. Library staff all benefited from the training, and from exposure to the ideas and concepts discussed in the learning groups.

LIFT DIGITAL CONFIDENCE

The confidence of our staff in using digital devices and being able to assist customers was lifted by quite a margin and Sally used a continuum to prove this outcome as part of her programming. Excellent results achieved.
